President launches book on first freedom struggle

The book titled Asgiri Maha Viharaya and the First Freedom Fight in 1818 written recalling the first freedom struggle staged against British rule was launched under the patronage of President Maithripala Sirisena at Asgiriya Pirivena on Monday.

The book which highlights the importance of the first freedom struggle and the contribution made by the Mahanayaka Theras of the Asgiri Chapter was edited by Ven. Atipola Mahinda Thera, Ven. Katakumbure Dharmarama Thera, Ven. Ehelepola MahindaThera and Dr. Ajith Thalwatta.

This comprehensive volume includes information on every aspect of the freedom struggle based on the details gained through historical sources.

The Asgiriya Chapter is known to take the right decision at every decisive juncture and it was Ven. Wariyapola Sumangala Thera of the Asgiri Cahpter who launched the first domestic resistance against British rule.

 


‘Common national policy for country’s benefit needed’

A common national policy should be implemented in the country today, Ven. Anamaduwe Sri Dhammadassi Anunayakye Thera of the Asigirya Chapter said yesterday.

He said a state of confusion has occurred in the country today as a result of political parties taking decisions according to their own whims and fancies and their needs.

The Asgiriya Anunayake Thera was speaking at a ceremony held at the Asgiri Piriven Viharaya on Monday afternoon to mark the launch of the book titled Asgiri Maha Viharaya and the first freedom struggle of 1818. The ceremony was held under the patronage of President Maithripala Sirisena. The book has been written highlighting the importance of the first liberation struggle and the contribution made to it by the Mahasangha of the Asigiriya Vihara Chapter.
