Suspended IGP arrested, bailed, for 2017 incident

CID has CCTV footage:

Inspector General of Police Pujith Jayasundara, who is currently sent on compulsory leave, was yesterday arrested by the CID for allegedly threatening and intimidating a lift operator at the Police headquarters in 2017.

He was released on bail after being produced before Colombo Fort Magistrate Ranga Dissanayake by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID). Jayasundara was ordered to be released on a surety of Rs.200,000.

The CID informed court that Jayasundara was arrested when he was summoned to the CID to give a statement over the incident. The CID further informed the court they had recorded statements from the IGP regarding the incident. The CID further stated that they had already obtained CCTV footage pertaining to the incident from Police headquarters.

The CID said that they had recorded statements from the suspect by showing the CCTV footage. The suspect himself had admitted that he had been involved with this incident, CID further told court. The police constable had lodged a complaint before the acting IGP, senior DIG C.D. Wickramaratne, regarding this incident on June 2, 2019. The CID stated that Jayasundara has committed punishable offences under section 344,347 and 483 of the Penal Code.

President’s Counsel Anura Maddegoda, appearing on behalf of the suspect, pleaded that his client be granted bail. The Magistrate observed that the complainant had lodged a regarding this incident after lapse of two and a half years period. The Magistrate fixed further inquiries for January 8 next year.
