Railway strike to continue

The strike by railway trade unions will continue as talks between the railway authorities and union representatives failed yesterday, union sources said.

The Cabinet Sub-Committee appointed last Friday to look into the salary anomalies of government institutions and recommend solutions was convened yesterday.

However, railway trade unions have decided to continue the strike as the discussions with the Cabinet Sub-Committee concluded without any decision, a Spokesman from the Locomotive Engine Operators’ Union (LEOU) told the Daily News.

Ministers Mangala Samaraweera, Ranjith Madduma Bandara, Vajira Abeywardena and Rajitha Senaratne comprise the Cabinet Sub-Committee.

Therefore, the train strike by railway employees to rectify the salary anomalies entered the fifth consecutive day yesterday causing greater inconvenience to train commuters.

“Against this backdrop, eleven trains operated to Colombo Fort yesterday morning to facilitate the office commuters during the strike,” a senior Railways official said.

The trade unions resorted to strike action from midnight on September 25 demanding the authorities to remove the existing salary anomalies in the railway service.
