Justice Heevi Rodrigo

A judge par excellence

Justice Heevi Rodrigo, retired judge of the Supreme Court, passed away at the age of 99 years on September 12, in Colombo.

Justice Rodrigo was educated at Dharmaraja College, Kandy. He graduated from the Sri Lanka Law College and practised as an Advocate until he was appointed to the Court of Appeal. He was appointed to the Supreme Court a couple of years later and continued to serve as a Supreme Court Judge until his retirement.

Justice Rodrigo continued to serve his country and community after his retirement from the Supreme Court. He served on the Committee for Monitoring the Cessation of Hostilities during the Civil war.

He also served on the Board of Directors of Lake House as it Legal Director. Justice Rodrigo was a member of the Council of the University of Kelaniya and also served as an International Arbitrator.

He was dedicated to his alma mater, Dharmaraja College, as an active member of the Old Boys’ Union, and also served as an honorary Patron. Justice Rodrigo was an avid tennis player and enjoyed the game of tennis every day. He remained active until his passing.

Justice Rodrigo was a devoted husband to late Lakshmi Rodrigo and is survived by his two daughters, Dr. Irandathy Rodrigo and Thamali Wijegunawardena, sons-in-law Jayantha Rodrigo and Sumith Wijegunawardena, and grandchildren Attorney-at-Law Manishi Rodrigo, Heshan Rodrigo; Neluka, Natasha and Shanika Wijegunawardena; as well as Keith Menezes.

Justice Rodrigo was cremated on September 14, 2019, at the Borella General Cemetery, at a private funeral ceremony according to his wishes.
