Four held in Kandy kovil gold heist

Part of gold, cash worth Rs. 100 mn recovered:

The Kandy Police investigating the robbery of gold and cash valued at nearly Rs. 100 million from the Kandy Sri Bhadrakali Kovil arrested four suspects within 12 hours of the robbery.

Following interrogation of the suspects, police succeeded in recovering Rs. 2.5 million of the Rs. 7 million in cash stolen and a part of the stolen gold.

Investigations also revealed that a person who served as secretary to the kovil priest for the last seven-and-a-half years had masterminded the robbery.

The identification was made by perusing video clips of the CCTV cameras after the priest said a person familiar with the place where the keys of the kovil vault were kept must have been involved in the robbery.

Four suspects were arrested following interrogation of the secretary who masterminded the robbery. They are residents of Kiribathkumbura, Gampola and Heerassagala.

Another suspect said to be an ex-STF personnel had fled the area. The Central Province DIG has deployed several police teams to arrest him.

Investigations were made by a police team led by Talatuoya OIC Inspector Aruna Krishantha, directed by Central Province Senior DIG S.M. Wickremesinghe, DIG D.L.R. Ranaweera and ASP Kamal Ariyawansa.
