SLFP will not field Welgama as Prez candidate - Dayasiri

The Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) has no intention of fielding MP Kumara Welgama as its Presidential candidate, SLFP General Secretary MP Dayasiri Jayasekara announced yesterday. He was responding to a question by a journalist regarding a statement made by MP Welgama at a media conference held yesterday at the N.M. Perera Centre in Borella claiming that he is ready to be the SLFP Presidential candidate.

Addressing the weekly SLFP media conference held yesterday at the SLFP headquarters, MP Jayasekara said it was suspicious whether MP Welgama is fulfilling a contract of the UNP or has any other hidden agenda.

“MP Welgama’s behaviour is contradictory. It is questionable why Welgama is not supporting Gotabaya Rajapaksa, the brother of his loyal leader Mahinda Rajapaksa,” he said.

Jayasekera said if the SLFP decided to support any political party at the upcoming Presidential Election, nobody can become a candidate representing the SLFP.

He insisted that the SLFP would never work for a UNP victory and said that forming a powerful anti-UNP coalition was the party’s primary objective, and that they would take all possible measures to do that.

“Discussions are still going on with the SLPP with regard to the formation of this coalition and we urge our SLPP members to agree with a neutral symbol to satisfy grassroots-level SLFP supporters,” Dayasiri added.

Commenting on the continuous protest of disabled war heroes, MP Jayasekara assured that the SLFP is ready to take all possible measures to solve the issues face by the disabled war heroes, whether they demanded it or not.

As the Chairman of the party, the President has already granted full pension and salary to them. He urged politicians not to take political advantage using the plight of these war heroes.

“This is an issue of nearly 39,000 war heroes and not only the issue of protesting war heroes. The government has to spend Rs.3.5 billion monthly to pay the salaries demanded by them. So, the public will have to bear this.” Jayasekara said.
