Dy.Min threatens to resign if Sajith not named candidate

Development Strategies and International Trade Deputy Minister Nalin Bandara says that he and several other United National Party MPs may resign from politics if Sajith Premadasa is not named as the Presidential candidate.

He told the Daily News the UNP will lose the Presidential Election if Premadasa is not named as the party’s Presidential candidate.

“No one needs to support candidates who cannot win the next Presidential election. If Premadasa, who is the ideal candidate is not named I may go back to the teaching profession again,” Bandara said.

He urged the UNP leadership to name Premadasa as the UNP candidate without wasting time anymore “…as there is no time to play the fool”.

When asked whether Premadasa will be nominated, he said that it should be since there is no other capable person of winning the forthcoming Presidential Election except Premadasa.

According to Deputy Minister Bandara, the majority of the Working Committee, the Parliamentary Committee and parties supporting the UNP request the party leadership to name Premadasa as the Presidential candidate.

Asked about the move to abolish the Executive Presidency, he said that it is a childish act of a person, who does not have the winning mentality. Besides, he condemned the move to abolish the Executive Presidency at a time when a Presidential election has been called.
