The water levels in almost all tanks in the Anuradhapura district have decreased as a result of the prevailing drought. Therefore, the cultivation targets for the 2019/20 Maha season are to be revised depending on monsoon rains expected in mid-October.

Although an additional Mahaweli water volume is being provided to Nuwarawewa and Thuruwila tanks for drinking purposes, there is a fear of a huge shortage of drinking water in the Anuradhapura district.

At present, only a little amount of water is remaining in 2,300 small tanks out of 3,000 tanks in the district.

The Agrarian Development department has warned villagers to use tank water sparingly until the monsoon rains due in mid-October begins. Also, the Anuradhapura Disaster Management Unit is distributing drinking water to 10,132 families in 15 Divisional Secretariat Divisions using 39 bowsers and it is reported that the demand for drinking water is on the rise.
