SLFP may contest presidency with new anti-corruption coalition - Spokesman

The SLFP has started discussions with intellectual groups and certain leftist political forces to explore the formation of an anti-corruption political movement to field a candidate at the forthcoming Presidential election, a party spokesperson announced yesterday.

SLFP Media Spokesperson MP Weerakumara Dissanayake told a press conference at the party headquarters in Colombo that: “Other thanthe anti–UNP or anti–Rajapaksa political culture, there is room for an anti-corruption political culture. So various parties have invited the SLFP to take the lead for the people who have such a different ideology.”

He said that this was one of the options being explored by the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) with regard to the upcoming Presidential elections. Further elaborating, MP Dissanayake said that the forming of a powerful anti-UNP coalition was the best option that the party has. Dissanyake said that: “a common symbol was the only thing that we demanded during several rounds of discussions held with the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) which they haven’t agreed to so far.”

“The Flower Bud symbol is not an issue for national level politicians of the SLFP. But it’s an issue for the grassroots level SLFPers, because they had to contest with SLPP politicians during the Local Government elections.

The objective of forming a coalition is to win the Presidential election and it is important to have a neutral symbol to meet that objective,” the MP said.

He said that if the SLPP does not agree to a neutral symbol, then the SLFP must explore the other option of an anti-corruption coalition.

He added that fielding a SLFP candidate is the third option and as a leader with no allegations of corruption, President Maithripala Sirisena was the best candidate to contest at the upcoming election.

Former SLFP General Secretary Prof. Rohana Lakshman Piyadasa also spoke.
