‘President genuine about minority issues’

President Maithripala Sirisena has taken measures to release a large extent of state and private land in the North and ensure the democratic rights of the people in the North, SLFP Jaffna District MP Angajan Ramanathan said.

Speaking at a media conference on Tuesday at the SLFP headquarters, MP Ramanathan said only 21,073 acres of state lands and 19,989 acres of private lands had been released during the period 2009–2014.

“But between 2015 and 2019, President Sirisena released 42,247 acres of state lands and 5,958 acres of private lands. He is still in the process of releasing more land which ought to be released to the public,” said the MP.

Responding to a question by a journalist, the MP said that the Tamil community will cast their vote for the Presidential candidate who genuinely addresses their issues. President Sirisena is a leader who listens to the issues of minorities and genuinely addresses those issues.

“In 2015, President Sirisena came to power promising to establish good governance. The Tamil people had a lot of faith in the unity government jointly formed by the UNP and SLFP. But the Prime Minister and his UNP has not been able to fulfil what they promised in 2015.

But President Sirisena during his visit to Jaffna very clearly stated that he is ready to solve the issues of the Tamil community,” he said.
