Magistrate rejects request to summon CID Director over Madush’s detention

Colombo Fort Magistrate Ranga Dissanayake yesterday rejected the request made by personal complaint lodged before the court that notice be issued to Criminal Investigation Department (CID) Director SSP Shani Abeysekara to appear before the court on charges of incarceration of druglord Makandure Madush by the CID.

This personal complaint had been lodged by attorney-at-law Jagath Saliya Samarasinghe.

The Magistrate in rejecting the request observed that there is insufficient evidence against the CID Director to summon him before court.

According to the complaint, the attorney had mentioned that his client druglord Makandure Madush has been detained under the Prevention of Terrorism Act (PTA) since his deportation from Dubai and the 90-day detention period had ended on August 3.

The CID had earlier informed the court that Madush was detained for over 90 days for questioning under the Prevention of Terrorism Act on allegations of attempts to assassinate President Maithripala Sirisena, former Defence Secretary Gotabaya Rajapaksa and several top police officers.

CID Director Shani Abesekara appeared before the court yesterday.
