Releasing private lands used by Jaffna forces, police:

‘Committee needed to identify alternative lands within three weeks’

On the instructions of President Maithripala Sirisena, a discussion on identifying and handing over private lands used by the army and the police in Jaffna, was held under the chair of Northern Province Governor Dr. Suren Raghavan at the Jaffna District Secretariat, yesterday.

The discussion focused on the lands of 1,800 families in the Palaly East area, the lands of 431 families in Mayiliddy area, as well as other lands used by the army in the Jaffna District. Alternative lands for the military were also discussed at the meeting.

Governor Raghavan said that a committee should be formed to identify the alternative lands within three weeks. The Army Commander also stated that steps would be taken to release the lands located near the Nadeswara College railway line, at the request of the Governor.

The Governor said that the discussion was positive and the next phase of the discussion would be held on September 24, after an additional discussion with the military, police, and the public.

The Government Agent of the Jaffna District, Secretary to the Governor of the Northern Province, commanders of the tri-forces, departments officers, government officials; as well as parliamentarians Mavai Senathirajah, Sivagnanam Sreetharan, and Tharmalingam Siththarthan; participated in the meeting.
