The Cabinet of Ministers on Tuesday approved the amendments to the Code of Criminal Procedure Act No. 15 of 1979 made by the Sectoral Oversight Committee and the Draft Bill (Amendment) gazetted on June 14, this year.
The amendments were presented for Cabinet approval as per a decision by the Cabinet that the committee level amendments should be presented for its approval prior to be tabled at the House. Justice and Prison Reforms Minister Thalatha Athukorala presented the Cabinet memorandum. The Cabinet of Ministers approved another proposal presented by Minister Athukorala with regard to the increase of the penalties specified in the Bail Act No 30 of 1997. The proposal had been in line with the recommendations submitted by the committee appointed by the former Subject Minister.
