Cold storage unit soon in Hambantota: Sajith

Housing, Construction, and Cultural Affairs Minister Sajith Premadasa said that a cold storage unit would soon be set up to preserve agricultural commodities in the Hambantota District.

He was speaking at the inauguration ceremony of the Silsuwadagama and Siyamithurugama model villages held in Lunugamwehera, Hambantota. Minister Premadasa said that at present, a cold storage unit is being constructed in Dambulla. He added that the unit could hold six metric tonnes of agricultural commodities.

Furthermore, steps would also be taken to export more such commodities, he said, adding that a loan scheme would be introduced for the endeavour as well.

Farmers in the country have had one raw deal after another for decades under previous regimes, and they have also been affected by climate change as well, Minister Premadasa said. He added that certain self-proclaimed patriots repeatedly make false pledges that farmers would be provided with relief.

He said a sum of Rs.79.5 million has been spent on the two model villages.
