Rs. 250 mn allocated for upgrade of De Soysa Hospital for Women

Health, Nutrition and Indigenous Medicine Minister Dr. Rajitha Senaratne recently laid the foundation stone for a development project to be launched at De Soysa Hospital for Women at a cost of Rs. 250 million.

The four-storey building will house a maternal intensive care unit, maternity ward complex, a training unit for doctors and nurses, and a female ward complex. A Rs. 300 million ward complex has already been opened at the hospital. Rs. 40 million has been allocated for the hospital this year.

At the foundation stone-laying ceremony, Minister Senaratne said no government after independence had built a maternal and children’s hospital, but this government set up 12 maternity hospitals and 12 children’s hospitals for the people under the free health care service.

Only this government had allocated the largest-ever fund for health and education. It is an investment for the future, he said.

This government has allocated Rs. 590 million for hospital development this year. Another six-storey ward complex is to be constructed at De Soysa Hospital for Women with foreign aid. All state hospitals are to be developed under one plan, protecting their historical architecture, the Minister said.
