“No racism will be encouraged at Ruhuna” – Vice Chancellor

The vice Chancellor of the University of Ruhuna Senior Professor Sujeewa Amarasena said that he will not encourage racism or bring racism to sports or academics at the University. He said that the University has over 9000 internal and 20,000 external students and no racism has been reported up to now. “The instigators will be dealt severely if it does take place” he warned. Professor Amarasena made these remarks at the closing ceremony of the 13th Sri Lanka University Games held at the Rabindranath Tagore Auditorium of the University of Ruhuna last Saturday.

“We have had healthy competition, disputes and debates within the past twelve days but it is sad that at times some problems are misinterpreted and institutions are being discredited”.

The incident referred to is as follows - In the17th minute of final of the football tournament between the University of Jaffna and the University of Moratuwa played at the Kotawila Stadium, a player from the University of Jaffna who was about to score a goal ended up with a fractured leg after receiving a kick from the goalie of the University of Moratuwa. The goalie was shown the red card and a penalty awarded to the University of Jaffna. It had taken about 15 to 20 minutes for the referees to get the game restarted but before the penalty was taken it began to rain and further play was not possible on that day.In keeping with the FIFA rules and the technical guidelines of the tournament, the officials decided that the match should resume the next morning from the point it ended. As the University of Moratuwa team did not take to the field the next morning the officials very correctly awarded the match to the University of Jaffna.

"The Sri Lanka University Sports Association officials at a meeting which I was not present had reversed this decision. I believe that SLUSA should not have interfered in the decision made by the match officials and technical committee". Professor Amarasena said that it was sad that a video put out by the students union of the University of Jaffna, which is going viral on social media blames the University of Ruhuna for the incident.

"It is unfair to lay the blame on the University of Ruhuna because the University of Ruhuna had no hand in reversing the match’s official decision which I believe was correct.

Today I have instructed that the football shield should not be awarded until the dispute is resolved" he added.
