Youth remanded for demolishing Buddha statue

A past pupil of Dhammissara MMV, Nattandiya who had demolished a statue of Buddha in a class room and wrote abusive utterances on white boards in several class rooms was arrested on 09th of this month and later, he was produced before Marawila Magistrate Mr. S. Mahendraraja, who ordered the suspect to be kept in remand custody till 23 rd of this month.

The suspect was a 23-year-old youth in the Mahawewa area in the Marawila Police area. Mr. S.A. Anil Pushpakumara, the Principal of that school had lodged a complaint to the Marawila Police and accordingly, the suspect was arrested. IP Dhammika Wijesena, OIC, Marawila Police station is investigating this further. The relatives of this youth have told Police that this suspect was being treated for mental disorder.

TheMagistrate ordered that a medical report should be forwarded to the court on

23rd of this month concerning the mental fitness of the suspect.
