A majority of Colombo Municipal Council employees are considered as strikers according to the general opinion prevalent within the Council itself and the Council area in general. Therefore, we should resolve to perform the duties and responsibilities properly in order to overcome this bad opinion, Colombo’s Mayor Rosy Senanayake said. She was addressing a meeting held at the Colombo Public Library to grant appointment letters to a new batch of 249 recruits to existing vacancies a in the Western Province state service recently. These included 158 vacancies for Grade 3 drivers, 85 firemen and 6 administrative vacancies.

Mayor Rosy Senanayake said the Colombo Municipal was the biggest local council in the Local Government Service with a 150 year history. All employees attached to it should therefore consider them as fortunate to be part of it. She said the country would be a better place to live in if all and sundry serve the society properly armed with proper attitude. Chief Whip of the Council’s governing UNP group Titus Perera, councillors Renuka Jayasinghe, Uma Chandra Prakash, Chamika H.J.Pathirane, A.A.D.Sugath Kumara, Arugam Kanna, Thushara Manamperi, Municipal Commissioner Palitha Nanayakkara and several other officials were present on this occassion.
