Minister orders probe into assault on child novice monks

Buddhasasana and Wayamba Development Minister Gamini Jayawickrema Perera has called for ‘stern action’ against the perpetrator in the incident of assault of two child novice monks (Samanera) that was reported from Horowpothana on Tuesday.

He said that prompt action against the culprit should be taken to prevent such incidents in future.

Addressing a media conference held at the Government Information Department yesterday, Minister Perera said that according to Buddha’s teaching, this type of ‘kamma’ would return to haunt the perpetrator in this life itself. “We have to take immediate legal action against the culprit and I have requested the IGP to take stern legal action without any delay,” he said.

Police Media Spokesman SP Ruwan Gunasekara said the suspect wanted in connection with this incident had already been arrested by the Horowpothana Police and he has been identified as Gammedde Chaminda Galaboda alias ‘Utiya’.

The suspect was produced before the Padaviya Magistrate’s Court and the Magistrate had placed him in remand till September 24.

Minister Perera stressed the importance of protecting the 40,000 Bhikkus in the country since they are the ones who safeguard the Buddha Sasana and also teach the essence of Buddhism.

‘Buduputh Mapiya Suraksha’, the second phase of ‘Shasana Suraksha’ insurance scheme introduced for Bhikkus will be launched in Moneragala on September 22, the Minister also announced.

The Sasana Suraksha programme consists of the introduction of a life insurance scheme for Bhikkus (Budu Puth Suraksha), implementation of a programme to provide assistance to the parents of Bhikkus (Budu Puth Mau Piya Suraksha) and development of facilities at temples in rural areas (Bodu Arama Suraksha).
