Santha Bandara claims MP seat

Former National List MP and SLFP Chief Organiser for the Dambadenia Electorate Santha Bandara said that he would discuss with the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) leader, President Maithripala Sirisena, the injustice he underwent by depriving him of the parliamentary seat that fell vacant following the demise of Salinda Dissanayake.

Shantha Bandara told Daily News that he obtained more preferential votes than D. B. Herath at the election. “D.B.Herath has been granted the vacant seat but he received a fewer votes than I got,” Shantha Bandara said.

“I will discuss this injustice with the SLFP leadership shortly and seek legal solace to have justice,” he said.

He said it was unfair and illegal to nominate former Minister D.B.Herath for the vacant parliamentary post of the Kurunegala District by the Kurunegala District Returning Officer as he (Bandara) was the next candidate, who had received majority of preferential votes at the last parliamentary election. He added that he should have been nominated for the vacancy. “I resigned from the national list MP post as instructed by the UPFA leadership before the Election Commission informed about the vacancy, I had already resigned from my national list MP post in the hope of getting this new opportunity as a Kurunegala District parliamentarian,” Shantha Bandara said.
