The government has been implementing development projects to facilitate and modernise schools in the rural areas, covering all the provinces. It has created opportunities for all students to get exposed to methodical education limited only for urban schools, Chief of the Prime Minister Staff, Ports Shipping and Southern Development Minister Sagala Ratnayaka said.

He was speaking at a ceremony to hand over couple of three and two storey buildings at the Dudley Senanayake Vidyalaya, Pitabeddara, Matara.

“The “Nearest school is the best school” concept initiated by our government has shown substantial results.

It is not limited to a specific area of the country. Under the programme, numerous development projects are being initiated throughout the island to upgrade buildings, laboratories, auditoriums, aesthetic units, student and hostels. We have experienced this concept during our childhood. In that period, we didn’t face any impact due to popular schools concept and all the schools were being operated at same level. Subsequently, our government re-established the earlier concept to avoid troughs in the education system, ensuring a sustainable growth throughout the country,” Minister Sagala Ratnayaka said.

‘The nearest school is the best school’ will be implemented in the next year as well and Rs. 65,000 million will be spent on the project. Under this program, 18,000 projects in 9,063 schools of the total number of 10,165 schools will be set up,” he said.
