‘Vocational training has lowered unemployment rate’

The number of youths enrolling in vocational training and industrial education has increased as a result of the government’s move to provide free vocational training courses, Deputy Minister Karunaratne Paranavithana said.

He said many positive changes have taken place in the vocational training sector due to the transformation taking place within the Vocational Training and Skills Development Ministry during the past four years.

The deputy minister was speaking at a media conference at the Government Information Department, yesterday.

“The unemployment issue has been resolved to a certain extent now due to those who have received vocational training. Such students are employed locally or internationally and are contributing to the country’s economy,” he said.

The revenue of the National Institute of Business Management (NIBM) and the National School of Business Management (NSBM) Green University, which is under the purview of his ministry, is reinvested for the institutions themselves.

A programme to conduct training courses together with the Education Ministry would also be implemented, he said.
