‘Extensive development in Mahaweli area since 2015’

President Maithripala Sirisena said during the last five years extensive measures have been taken to further develop the Mahaweli Development Project.

He was speaking at the closing ceremony of the 31st Mahaweli Games in Bisopura, Medirigiriya, on Sunday.

President Sirisena said the Mahaweli Development Project which spreads over 40 percent of the land area of the country is the largest development project ever implemented in Sri Lanka. He said he was able to fulfill many obligations for the benefit of the farmer community through the project.

The Mahaweli Games which foster sporting skills among the children of Mahaweli farmers was held over two days on a grand scale this time too with the participation of more than 1,500 sportsmen and sportswomen representing 10 Mahaweli Zones.

The President presented the awards at the Games and Mahaweli H Zone won the President’s Trophy, while Mahaweli C Zone won the Runners-Up Trophy.

Meanwhile, the President vested the Mahaweli Ground in Bisopura with the public. The total cost of the project is Rs.170 million.
