Euro-Asia Economic Forum begins in Xi’an today

The eighth 2019 Euro-Asia Economic Forum representing the member states of Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) will be held in Xi’an, capital of Shaanxi province, from today (10) to September 12.

Sri Lanka currently holds dialogue partner status at SCO.

The Euro-Asia Economic Forum is a large-scale institutional foreign-related forum covering the vast Eurasian region and consists of member states of SCO.

This forum is held every two years, approved by the China State Council. Since being set up in 2005, it has been held seven times.

The theme of the eighth 2019 Euro-Asia Economic Forum is ‘The Belt and Road Construction: High-Level Cooperation and High-Quality Development’.

During its three-day programme starting today, several meetings will be held to establish partnerships among countries, international organisations, major industries and local governments and to push China and other countries to consolidate solidarity, jointly tackle challenges, and deepen pragmatic cooperation for the community with a shared destiny.

Currently, eight countries enjoy the status of full members of the SCO. They are India, Kazakhstan, China, Kyrgyzstan, Russia, Pakistan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan. In addition, Afghanistan, Belarus, Iran and Mongolia have observer status with the SCO. Six other countries – Sri Lanka, Azerbaijan, Armenia, Cambodia, Nepal and Turkey – have dialogue partner status.

This forum includes the opening ceremony and the general meeting and 10 parallel sessions on finance, ecology, culture and tourism, meteorology, science and technology, education, geological survey, e-commerce and green architecture.

The Euro-Asia Economic Forum has invited one member of the Political Bureau of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China; heads of states and ministerial officials of member states, observer states and partner states of SCO and countries along the Belt and Road; important representatives of international organisations; envoys from foreign embassies in China and domestic and overseas representatives of sister cities; top 500 companies in the world; and experts and scholars and media representatives.

The Euro-Asia Economic Forum has played an important role in promoting mutual understanding between Asian and European countries, as well as improving the development level of Shaanxi’s export-oriented economy.

The Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) is a permanent intergovernmental international organization whose main goals are strengthening mutual confidence and good-neighbourly relations among the member countries; promoting effective cooperation in politics, trade and economy, science and technology, culture as well as education, energy, transportation, tourism, environmental protection and other fields; making joint efforts to maintain and ensure peace, security and stability in the region; and moving towards the establishment of a new, democratic, just and rational political and economic international order.
