Two soldiers of 5 (V) Mechanized Infantry Regiment serving at the 66 Division at the Security Force Headquarters in Kilinochchi rescued a mother and her two children who were drowning in the Arasapurakulam tank in Arasapurakulam on Saturday afternoon.

The soldiers who were passing by the tank, on hearing the woman and her two children screaming for help, had rushed to the scene. Both soldiers had safely brought ashore the victims in distress.

It was reported that the victims had gone to the tank to have a bath and the strong currents had swept them away.

The two soldiers involved in the incident are Lance Corporal D.G.S Amarasiri and Lance Corporal T.G.J.P Ariyarathne.

The mother and the children had been taken to the Pooneryn Hospital.

Later, they had been transferred to the Jaffna Teaching Hospital for further treatment on medical advice, an Army spokesman said.
