Country should be made free of corruption – Gotabaya

Sri Lanka as a democratic country will have only one law and that should be applicable to each and every citizen, presidential aspirant of the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) and ‘Viyathmaga’ organization chairman Gotabhaya Rajapakse remarked yesterday.

Rajapakse, the one-time Defence Ministry Secretary was speaking at the third annual convention of the ‘Viyathmaga’ organization held in the main ballroom of the luxury Shangri-La Hotel in Colombo last evening.

Former President and Opposition Leader Mahinda Rajapakse was also present along with attending academics, professionals and business people who make up the Viyathmaga membership. Rajapakse said the country should be free from crimes, drug trafficking, terrorist financing, money laundering and corruption. “I am committed to address national security not only as a defensive mechanism, but also to provide broader social, political and economic security to the people”, he said.

He said it should be the primary duty of a government to maintain friendly relations with the world powers while firmly safeguarding the country’s sovereignty. “Foreign direct investments (FDIs) should also be encouraged strategically while safeguarding the country’s sovereignty,” he said and added that Sri Lanka needs an FDI policy that will attract investments which can transfer technologies and knowledge and increase our productivity. Rajapakse said the rule of law is vital to protect the sovereignty of the people. For that, he stressed the need to review the constitution, revamp laws that have got obsolete with time and change the election laws in accordance with the present day requirement of the country.

He said the politicians should understand the needs of the people when drafting national policies and those policies must be enacted by the technocrats, who are with comprehensive knowledge on the relevant subject. In parallel with the annual convention, seven sessions on different themes were held throughout the day at the Shangri-La yesterday with the participation of the attending Viyathmaga membership.
