Traffic snarls worsen in Panadura

Traffic congestion in the Panadura Urban Council area has worsened because the Road Developement Authority (RDA) and the Water Board have not consulted the Panadura Urban Council when launching development projects, UC Chairman Nandana Gunathilake said.

The problem was discussed at the monthly meeting of the Council held at the Council’s auditorium on Thursday.

The Panadura town traffic plan needs to be revised and the Traffic Committee reconstituted with the co-operation of the Panadura South Police and the Urban Council. Panadura division SP S.D. Wickramasinghe will hold a meeting with the Panadura Urban Council to discuss the traffic problems in the town, the UC Chairman said.

Arthur V. Dias Mawatha has many unauthorised pavement hawkers obstructing traffic. A new building to house the Panadura public market will be constructed and the discussions held with relevant authorities were fruitful, he said.

The Gamperaliya programme introduced by the Finance Minister on the instructions of Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe has been successfully launched in the Panadura electorate with the participation of residents. Minister Patali Champika Ranawaka had introduced a plan to develop Panadura beach which is visited by hundreds of families in the weekends, Gunathilake said.

A new building by the road near the beach will be constructed for the use of traders. A programme has been introduced in Panadura town by the Urban Council for three-wheelers and a three-wheeler park has been planned. There is congestion on Galle Road opposite the Panadura public bus stand in peak hours because dozens of private and SLTB buses were blocking other traffic, which also needs to be looked into, he said.
