House painter, goldsmith arrested for jewellery theft

A man hired to carry out a painting job who allegedly robbed gold jewellery worth over Rs. 400,000 from the house he was painting and a jeweller who allegedly bought the jewellery and melted it, were nabbed by Gandara Police in Gandara, Matara yesterday.

Gandara Police also found a gold chain in the possession of the painter suspect which he allegedly purchased with the money he obtained for the stolen jewellery.

The suspect had reportedly bought the gold chain for his child, police said.

Police also arrested the jeweller who is a resident of Walgama following information received from the first suspect.

Gandara Police are investigating.
