A three-month-old baby elephant was rescued by Wildlife officers near Elagamuwa, Moragahakanda, on Friday, Department of Wildlife (DWC) sources said.

The baby elephant had fallen into a well in Elagamuwa village which is an area that was submerged for the Moragahakanda Reservoir. Due to the dry conditions prevailing at present, the waters in the area have dwindled and the baby elephant who was roaming there with its mother had fallen into the well.

DWC officers in the Polonnaruwa region, Elahera range, rescued the baby elephant after a tedious struggle.

The baby elephant was safely delivered to its mother following the rescue operation.
