Upgrade for KV line from Maradana to Avissawella

The Transport and Civil Aviation Ministry will modernise the Kelani Valley (KV) railway line from Maradana to Avissawella.

The length of the line is 60 km and the daily passenger volume on this line is around 14,000. However, a fourfold increase in the daily passenger volume is projected with the improvement of the railway line,” a Transport and Civil Aviation Ministry spokesman said.

This single-track railway line which was originally narrow gauge was later converted to broad gauge along the same track. It has been identified that Padukka which is 35 km from Maradana is the best location to attract passengers from the Horana Corridor.

Therefore, considering the present and future demands, the railway line will be upgraded to a double track up to Padukka, and renovated the single track in the balance section up to Avissawella.

Under the first stage, the Maradana to Padukka section will be modernised with ADB funding. The Maradana to Malapalla section (23 km) will be double-lined and elevated, while the section from Malapalla to Padukka will be modernised to a double track.

The single-line section from Padukka to Avissawella will be rehabilitated. The Kelani Valley Railway Improvement Programme will include the rehabilitation, capacity upgrade, modernisation, and electrification of the Kelani Valley Line between the Maradana and Padukka railway stations.
