Case against Nethicumara postponed for Sept. 9

The case filed against businessman Shanil Nethicumara over a charge that he levelled death threats at Vijitha Wijesuriya, brother of Anika Wijesuriya, a witness in the Bond Commission inquiry, during the Bond Commission inquiry was yesterday fixed for September 9 by the Colombo High Court

The Attorney General had filed indictments against Neththikumara over a charge that he had levelled death threats at Vijith Wijesuriya, over the evidence he gave at the Bond Commission against Minister Karunanayake.

On the previous occasion, the defence counsel moved court to release his client’s passport citing that Neththicumara was expecting to travel to Dubai as an official of Ceylon Electricity Board to participate in the 24th World Energy Council to be held between September 9 and September 12.

However, senior State Counsel Lakmini Girihagama appearing on behalf of the Attorney General said the court had imposed a travel ban on the accused and raised objections questioning as to how an individual who had been indicted in the High Court could serve in a government institution.

The counsel informed court that a person with an indictment cannot work in a government institution and that he is not entitled to a salary from the government’s Consolidated Fund.

When the motion was called before the High Court previously, the defence counsel appearing for the defendant, informed court that Neththicumara’s father has undergone emergency surgery and therefore he will not submit the request to travel overseas.

Accordingly, he requested the court to allow the motion to be withdrawn and the High Court Judge granted permission to withdraw the motion.
