Defending champs India are hoping to make the most of the Asia Cup under 19 cricket tournament when they take on Kuwait in the curtain raiser at the CCC ground today.

Indian captain Dhruv Chad Jurel who will be leading his country for the first time in the one-day format as well as the tournament said, “This has been a good foundation for our players and we had a pretty decent series against England and Bangladesh both of which we won. We have played some good cricket being defending champs we are looking forward to win every match.”

Bandula Dissanayake, the tournament director for the event speaking at a press conference held at Jaic, Hilton yesterday said that the ACC had given Sri Lanka a good opportunity.

“Sri Lanka Cricket from our part has done everything to run this tournament successfully. The last time we held an international men’s tournament was in 2011 when we hosted the T20 world cup matches”, he said.

“In 2016 Thilanga Sumathipala, the former cricket chairman worked hard to make relationships internationally namely, the ICC and ACC. As a result we managed to get the Asian cricket council headquarters in Colombo for two years and later on ACC had enough confidence to help us conduct an under 19 Asia Cup in Sri Lanka as well as the women’s qualifying tournament,” Dissanayake said.

He said this will be a good chance for Sri Lankans as well to work with international teams and also for the ground authorities, the clubs to upgrade their ground facilities.

Kuwait is the new entry for this year’s Asia Cup edition as Hong Kong has not been included among the eight.

The tournament will go till September 14.
