Rotary presents TRR Rajan Cricket Sixes

One of the most looked forward to events in the Rotary calendar is the six-a-side cricket tournament of the Rotarians and Rotaract Trophy. This year’s edition will be held on September 7 at the Nittawela Rugby Stadium, Kandy.

Registrations have topped a record 1,000 entries and the winning team and runners-up will take home the T.R.R. Rajan memorial trophy (the founder of the Soorya Match brand).

This year’s event will be the 17th edition and will begin at 9 a.m. said the Director of Sun Match Company Gowri Rajan. The principal sponsor is the Asoka Group of Companies which attracts the Rotarians across the country given the excitement and entertainment the day provides as per the values of Rotary.

The President of the Rotary Club of Kandy S. Wigneshwaran commented: “This six-a-side cricket tournament is organized in memory of a well-loved Rotarian late T.R.R. Rajan who was the 51st president of the Rotary Club of Kandy, and the man who did yeoman service to this club and Rotary family. Better known as ‘TRR’, he was a versatile sportsman, sports benefactor, philanthropist and above all a gentleman of the highest calibre. He was the first to enter the field of sponsorship and the lucky club was Kandy Sports Club rugby team in 1992, the year they won the first trophy - the Clifford Cup. Later he sponsored Old Trinitians Sports Club rugby team.”

TRR also gave a big hand for hockey which his father P.T. Rajan re-introduced to Kandy. At present all TRR’s good work is continued by his brother B.D.R. Rajan, better known as Suri, one time Rotary Governor of District 3220. The TRR Rajan cricket tournament was founded in 2002, with funding provided by his family company Asoka group of companies.

The winners of the two tournaments will be presented with the T.R.R. Rajan memorial Trophy and also there will be awards for best batsman, bowler, fielder, the best dressed team and there will be a special award for the Man of the Tournament.

This time the tournament will be played under the distinguished patronage of District Governor Sebastian Karunakaran and the guest of honour will be the wife of late TRR Rajan, Jeeva, the three daughters Gowri, Ahalya, Ashwini and his brother Suri.

The TRR Rajan Sixes cricket tournament has successfully earned recognition as one of the best tournaments over here in the hills.

The event is seen by Rotarians as an opportunity for friendship exchange between the Rotary and Rotaract clubs. This is the longest-running six-a-side cricket tournament in Kandy.

So, it is going to be a good day’s cricket, if the weather permits, the purpose of this six-a-side cricket tournament is to bring together the Rotarians and Rotaract cultures with a particular focus together in a non-formal way through a friendly tournament of cricket games to promote friendship.
