FBI helping with Easter bombers’ mobile phone usage

Filing a B-report before the court, the Criminal Investigation Department yesterday informed Colombo Chief Magistrate Lanka Jayarathne that the phone internal data of the five mobile phones used by the Easter Sunday suicide bombers had been returned by US Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) after they had been sent to the US for tests.

The CID had submitted that they had earlier sent the mobile phones to the FBI for further investigations, explaining that the Sri Lankan agencies lacked the technology to conduct such investigations.

The CID also stated that FBI, and other US intelligence and law enforcement agency officers were providing technical assistance to the Sri Lankan agencies to conduct investigations into the Easter Sunday attack.

The CID told court that FBI officers were providing expertise regarding explosives, fingerprint analysis, gene analysis and mobile phone analysis.

The CID further informed court that FBI officers were willing to give evidence regarding the investigations done by them.

The Magistrate ordered the CID to conduct further investigations and report progress on the next calling date.
