Feast of Our Lady of Matara begins today

The 112th feast of Our Lady of Matara will begin today (5) at the church of Our Lady of Matara. The feast will culminate on September 8, the birthday of Mother Mary.

According to Rev. Fr. Michael Collin, the church is 400 years old and the statue of Our Lady of Matara was inaugurated in 1908.

Cathlic devotees from all walks of life from across the country attend this historical feast each year. Rev. Fr. Collin said that not only Catholics, but also Buddhist and Muslim youth extend their fullest cooperation towards this historical annual feast.

He said that those who attend the feast have been provided lodging at Mahanama College, St. Servatius College, Wilma Vidyalaya and St. Mary’s College in Matara.

The flag-hoisting ceremony to inaugurate the church feast was held on August 29.

Cathlic bishops as well as a host of bhikkus, moulavis and Hindu priests will participate in the feast.

Fr. Collin said security has been increased by enlisting the support of the Tri-Forces. Additional train and bus services have also been arranged for the benefit of devotees.
