Healthy food to be made compulsory in state establishments

The Health, Nutrition and Indigenous Medicine Ministry will issue a circular soon making it compulsory for all canteens in state institutions to offer nutritious food.

The Health Ministry spokesman said a regulatory system to be introduced soon for all school canteens and a colour code system will also be introduced for them to indicate their status. The National Council on Non-Communicable Diseases will carry out this task.

Nutritious food will be offered through all canteens in all institutions coming under the purview of the Health, Nutrition and Indigenous Medicine Ministry.

Then the system will be extended to all the other state institution canteens, he said.

The Nutrition Unit of the Health Ministry has already prepared lists and rules in connection with healthy food. The main objective of all the steps to be taken is safeguarding the nutrition level of food offered to the public and preventing Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs), he added.
