Men in ‘women-only’ compartments held

Security officers of the Railway Department with the assistance of Alawwa Police officers in the Kurunegala District succeeded in arresting 11 men who were travelling in women-only train compartments, on Tuesday.

The men who were arrested at Alawwa Railway Station were taken to Alawwa Police Station and they were severely warned over the gravity of the offence by the OIC of Alawwa Police and Assistant Railway Superintendent R.B.A. Rathnamalla. Railway authorities had received many complaints from female passengers that some men who travel in compartments designated only for women commit sexual harassment and abuse them while travelling.

It was reported that most of the victims are young women who work in government offices in the Kurunegala District.
