Major global transport conference in Colombo next week

Over 400 international delegates from 29 countries and 100 local participants will gather in Colombo from September 9 to 12 to discuss a range of issues within the theme ‘Redesigning Transport and Logistics for the Rise of Asia’.

This highly ranked and largest Asian conference on Transportation Research, EASTS 2019 running into its 13th edition will run 10 parallel presentation tracks at the Water’s Edge, Battaramulla.

EASTS, is the international conference of the Eastern Asia Society for Transportation Studies (EASTS). EASTS 2019 is jointly organized bythe Sri Lanka Society of Transport and Logistics (SLSTL). Founded in Japan in the year 1994 and currently enriched with representation from 19 Asian countries, EASTS works with the objectives to foster and support excellence in transportation research and practice and to stimulate professional interchange in all aspects and modes of transportation

The Chief Guest at the opening ceremony will be Dr. Indrajit Coomaraswamy, Governor of the Central Bank of Sri Lanka. The Guest of Honour, who will also address the gathering will be Prof. Mohan Munasinghe, physicist, academic and economist, who was a Vice-Chair of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), which shared the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize. The Keynote Addresses will be given by Prof.William H.K. Lam, Chair Professor of the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering of The Hong Kong Polytechnic University on “Pedestrian Planning in Hong Kong”and Prof. Amal S. Kumarage of the University of Moratuwa on “Sustainable Motorization Policies for Middle Income Countries”.

The conference also consists of a National Advisory Committee (NAC), chaired by Sunil Hettiarachchi, Secretary to the Ministry of Highways & Road Development and Petroleum Resources Development,who will also grace the opening ceremony as a Guest of Honourand consists of professionals from the transport and logistics industry, from various organizations such as Airport & Aviation Services (Sri Lanka) Limited,Chamber of Young Lankan Entrepreneurs, Federation of Chambers of Commerce and Industry of Sri Lanka, Institute of Supply and Materials Management, National Chamber of Exporters of Sri Lanka, Sri Lanka Association for Political Economy, Sri Lanka Economic Association, Sri Lanka Forum of University Economists, The Ceylon Chamber of Commerce, The National Chamber of Commerce of Sri Lanka, University of Colombo, University of Jaffna, University of Moratuwa, University of Peradeniya, University of Ruhuna, University of Sri Jayewardenepura and Urban Development Authority.

The conference will conclude with technical visits to several key transport installations, such as the Port of Colombo, Outer Circular Highway Project - Phase 3, LAUGFS Terminals, Hambantota and several key Supply Chain processing centres in the Colombo area. The 4th annual conference on Research for Transport and Logistics for Industry (R4TLI) organized by SLSTL will also run parallel at the same venue on September 10.
