The 89th Sir John Tarbat Schools Athletic Championship 2019 will take place at the Sugathadasa Stadium from September 10 to 12. The championship organized by Sri Lanka Schools Athletic Association (SLSAA) and Ceylon Biscuits Limited (CBL) Ritzbury has stepped forward for the 9th consecutive year as the sole sponsor with the aim of upliftng the standards of sports in the country whilst supporting budding athletes.

Currently standing as the oldest celebrated athletic championship in Sri Lanka, around 17,000 school athletes will showcase their talents in this year’s edition in senior and junior categories. The 50th edition final meet of the junior championship will be held at Vincent Dias Stadium, Badulla from November 8 to 10. Athletes who qualify from the regional meets held at Kandy, Wennappuwa and Matara will participate in the finals of junior championship, conducted under four age groups as under 12, 13, 14 and 15.

The six athletes recommended by SLSAA were offered financial scholarships by Ceylon Biscuits Ltd who showed their talents in last year. K. Shanika Lakshani - Holy Cross College, Gampaha, K. Sanjana Edirisinghe - President’s Girl’s College, Nawala, Ishara Nethmini - Ibbagamuwa Central College, G.D. Lahiru Avishka - Senanayake Vidyalaya, Madampe, W. Navishka Sandeep - St. Sebastian’s College, Moratuwa and H. Amisha Piyumanthi - Viharamahadevi Balika Vidyalaya, Kandy received their scholarships at the media briefing held at Galle Face Hotel yesterday.

“The Sir John Tarbat Championship has produced numerous national and international level athletes. This championship has such an excellent track record in fostering Sri Lanka’s best sporting talent. We offered financial scholarship to six athletes twice in the past and we expect to increase the scholarships to 12 athletes from next year. We believe our sponsorship of these athletes will contribute towards their progress over the years as they emerge into sporting stars of the future”, said Nilupul de Silva, General Manager Marketing, CBL Foods International (Pvt.) Ltd.
