SLPP claims Election Law violations in Elpitiya

A group of representatives of Sri Lanka Podujana Peramauna (SLPP) yesterday made a complaint to Galle District Deputy Commissioner of Elections K.U. Chandralal alleging that the United National Party had launched a campaign of distributing various handouts and offering diverse privileges to inspire the voters in the Elpitiya Electorate contravening the election laws following the announcement of the Elpitiya Pradeshiya Sabha election to be held on November 11.

The group included Galle SLPP authorised Election Agent Attorney Laltih U. Gamage, Attorney Nimal Walakuluarachchi and Galle District Parliamentarian and Lawyer Mohan P. De Silva.

Submitting their petition to the Deputy Election Commissioner, the SLPP representatives claimed that the Elpitiya UNP Chief Organiser and the Cabinet Minister of Lands had arranged to distribute plots of land in the State-owned Walahanduwa Estate in Galle among the UNPers as election inducement and additional arrangements had been made to offer Samurdhi allowances in large numbers among them. They pointed out that the moves of this nature in view of an election were a severe breach of Election Law.

Responding to the petitioners, the Deputy Elections Commissioner assured them that he would leave no room for anyone to violate the Election Law and would not hesitate to take stern action against those who make use of State assets and resources to obtain election benefits.

Commissioner Chandralal also affirmed that they would take steps to hold the Elpitiya Pradeshiya Sabha election as per the directives given by the Judiciary under the provisions of the country’s Constitution. He also said that the respective election would be held at 47 centres and counting will also take place at the same election centres.

For the Elpitiya Pradeshiya Sabha election, 85 candidates had submitted nominations from five recognised parties including the United National Party (UNP), United Peoples’ Freedom Alliance (UPFA), Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP), Democratic United National Front (DUNF) and Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP).
