Hambantota Hospital doctors on strike

The Out-Patient Department of the Hambantota General Hospital (OPD) remained closed yesterday inconveniencing many patients.

Braving the heavy rains, many patients had made their way to the hospital yesterday but were left stranded upon finding out that the doctors had gone on strike. Many left the hospital without receiving medical treatments due to the absence of doctors.

Dumindu Kodituwakku, Assistant Secretary of the Government Medical Officers Association (GMOA) of the Hambantota General Hospital said that the OPD has been closed as a trade union action. He also stated that a strike would continue today as well.

Dr. Ravindra Abeysuriya, the Superintendent of the Hambantota General Hospital, said that the strike was owing to a decision by the Health Ministry to transfer a doctor from the Hambantota Hospital to another hospital. While regretting the inconvenience caused, he requested the Health Ministry to look into the transfer and resolve issues as the strike was inconveniencing many patients.
