Welikada Prison authorities have stepped in to resolve the shortage of sanitary towels encountered by female prison inmates by producing them within the prison itself.

Although most female inmates get their requirements through family members and relatives visiting them, female inmates serving life imprisonment are hard-pressed to find their requirements as they do not have any visitors even from their immediate families.

Currently, six inmates attached to the women section of the prison are engaged in producing sanitary towels needed by this section of inmates by using a production machine and a special cabin donated by social worker and Bandanagara Mithuro Organisation member Jani Perera, in response to a request made by officials led by Commissioner General of Prisons T.M.T.H. Tennakoon.

The new product has been given the brand name Sinidu.
