EC chief explains polls rules at lecture

Kalutara District Elections Office organised a lecture on the upcoming elections and its rules and regulations for state officials who will be on duty at elections centres, at the Kalutara District Secretariat auditorium yesterday.

Elections Commission Chairman Mahinda Deshapriya delivered the lecture on rules and regulations for SPOs, JPOs, AROs and ROs and other officials.

Explaining the term ‘democracy’, the Elections Commission Chairman said women deserve the right place in society, which is a characteristic of democracy that is absent in our country. He pointed out several shortcomings in the Sri Lankan elections system when compared to developed countries such as the US, UK and India, the latter which is also our neighbour. He said it was a shortcoming in our elections system that there is no space given in the ballot paper for the ‘None of the above’ (NOTA) option. Kalutara Deputy Elections Commissioner Kalindra Jayaweera Fernando and Kalutara Government Agent U.D. Chandana Jayalal also expressed their views.
