Pension scheme for artistes mooted

A pension scheme will be set up soon by the Sri Lanka Social Assurance Board along with the Cultural Affairs Department for artistes in the country under the patronage of Primary Industries and Social Empowerment Minister Daya Gamage.

Artistes in various fields between the ages of 23 and 55 can claim memberships of the scheme.

Minister Daya Gamage told Daily News an artiste who becomes a member of the pension scheme at the age of 23 will receive a gratuity of Rs. 559,710 at 60 years in addition to a monthly pension. Every artiste will have a Rs. 50,000 fixed deposit granted by the Department and the amount will be released to the artiste at the age of 60 along with the annual interest.

Gamage explained that the amount of pension will be decided on the consent of the beneficiary.

A Primary Industries and Social Empowerment Ministry Spokesman said that when an artiste in the pension scheme dies before reaching 80 years, his or her spouse will receive the pension up to 80 years. If the member artiste passed away before 60 years, the dependents were entitled to receive a gratuity on the amount in the policy of the deceased pensioner.

Ministry Additional Secretary Nimal Kotawalagedara, Sri Lanka Social Assurance Board Chairman Dewaka Weerasinghe, Deputy General Manager Kalhari De Silva and Kelum Chathurange, Assistant General Manager Kapila Krishantha, Singers’ Association Chairman Keerthi Pascuel, Music Directors’ Association Chirman Sarath De Alwis and artistes representing other fields of arts participated in a meeting held in this regard chaired by Minister Daya Gamage at the Ministry recently.

Minister Gamage requested the artistes in the meeting to submit a list of names of artistes in the low-income group initially, to set up the project.
