Three sentenced to death

Panadura Provincial High Court Judge Mahesh Weeraman concluding the Moratu Modera murder case trial yesterday found three accused guilty of committing a murder and sentenced each of them to death.

The other four accused were acquitted as the indictments against them had not been proven beyond reasonable doubt.

Gampola Waduge Sumith Kumara Fonseka, Gampola Waduge Dinesh Pradeep Kumara Fonseka (two brothers) and Weera Hannadige Priyantha Fernando of Moratu-Modera were sentenced to death and Gampola Waduge Suranjith Fonseka, Wattoruthanthirige Ajith Fernando Liyanarchchige Bandula Fernando and Mantrihewage Nishantha Fernando of Moratu-Modera were acquitted.

All accused were indicted by the Attorney General for committing the murder of Mudiyanselage Janaka Prasad alias Janaka on February 22, 2010 in Moratu Modera by stabbing him with manna knives. State Counsel Priyani Abeywardena appeared for the prosecution.
