Railway gatekeepers request pay raise

Railway gatekeepers requested the authorities to increase their daily wages, recently. They said that their daily wages have remained unchanged, at Rs.250, for a long time.

Railway Gatekeepers’ Association President J.A.T. Premalal said that gatekeepers receive one of the lowest salaries in the country. They earn around Rs.7,500 per month, he said, adding that the salaries were provided not by the Railways Department, but by the Police Department.

Premalal said that even labourers earned around Rs.1,000 per day. He said there are 694 unprotected level crossings in the country, and that the number of gatekeepers appointed to them stood at 2,167.

“We have brought this matter to the notice of the authorities on several occasions, but no action has yet been taken to address the issue,” the Railway Gatekeepers’ Association President said.

When contacted by the Daily News, Civil Aviation and Transport State Minister Ashok Abeysinghe said that steps would be taken to increase their wages soon.
