Severe shortage of drugs will affect state hospitals soon – GMOA

There was a severe shortage of 319 drugs in the country as at end August. The list is available with the Government Medical Officers’ Association (GMOA) and has been issued to all media, GMOA Secretary Dr. Haritha Aluthge said.

Speaking at a press conference at the GMOA headquarters in Colombo yesterday, he said there is a shortage of a further 324 drugs. None of those drugs are available in state drug stores.

The full list of drugs which are not available has been issued to media. The drug shortage will affect all state hospitals shortly and it is unpreventable, Dr. Aluthge said.

Meanwhile on April 26, the Public Service Commission informed the Health Ministry Secretary that the current Director of the Central Drug Store is not qualified to hold the position. However, the Health Secretary has not taken any steps in connection with the issue thus far, he said.
