A launch with a difference

Moratuwa Arts Forum (MAF) completed 25 years of singing with other expertise of diverse arts in the musical city of Moratuwa. MAF launched a CD with evergreen golden oldies at the Sooriya Village, Colombo on August 25.

In the mixture of the soft music by the Echo-st Steel Band, Laksiri welcomed all commencing the fête specially thanking Udena Wickrasooriya for his dedication in making a lovely collection of songs to carry the name of MAF singers forward. Luckydeva next mentioned the value of vintage songs and how they can still make the feet tap to their rhythm.

Several speeches by Anuradha, Secretary, Lankika and Brian with regard to the Moratuwa music history, explaining how the name Moratuwa was formed by British “Mura Atuwa” renowned now as Moratuwa, with a sizable Christian population which started its musical stint with carol singing called then “Serenading” during Christmas time with the music followed up with piano accordions, Hawaiian guitars and drum beats, followed. Berty Dias was the pioneer player of the Hawaiian guitar.

The first ever group was “Wheels Combo” followed later with Beacons, Peddlars, Paragons, Jay Brothers, La Bambas, Los Flemincos, Golden Chimes, Pink and Purple. Now there are many glittering groups who dazzle the Moratuwa name with their tunes.

It was mentioned that Pandit W.D.Amaradewa, Victor Dalugama, Hemasiri Halpita, C.T.Fernando, Rukmani Devi, Arthur de Silva, Chandra de Silva Deva Adithya, C.L.Fonseka, Vicent de Paul, Chrstopher Paul, Nihal Nelson, Saman de Silva, Niranjala Sarojani, Paul Fernando, Punsiri Soysa, Freddie Silva Priya Peiris, Dr.Manella Joseph, Maxwell Mendis etc were few of the renowned names in music then and some are still blossoming in their 70s. Also “Vaada Baila sessions” were introduced by Moratuwa folks.

Still one can remember songs sung by their ancestors like “Mahajana Sevaya”, “Galkisse”, “Avile Samada”, “Bar Bar Bar” etc. Even the youngsters sing sing these tunes by heart.

The special event for the evening was to present the first CD copy to Merril Fernando, the oldest singing member who can still perform live on stage by Priya. A few media personalities too were felicitated by presenting a CD each by Udena Wickremasooriya. He said that he is proud to host a ceremony with the presence of Moratuwa singers.

Many songs of yester year were sung by Lankika, Brian Sureshni, Shenya, Lilanthi, Lucky, Lucille, Dilrukshi, the greatest pianist Ramani Soysa wh is next to the famous Pianist Priyani Soysa. They are products of Princess of Wales College.

The musical evening concluded with a vote of thanks presewnted by Priya.
