PC polls before Prez poll logistically ‘impossible’ – Elections Comm

Elections Commission Chairman Mahinda Deshapriya says that the possibility of holding the Provincial Council Elections prior to the Presidential elections was “very low”, given the very short notice and logistical difficulties arising from the fixed schedule for the forthcoming presidential election.

Speaking to the media on Saturday, the Chairman said that he has so far not received the Supreme Court’s determination in respect of the reference application forwarded by President Maithripala Sirisena seeking an opinion regarding the holding of Provincial Council elections.

If the Supreme Court recommends that the Provincial Council elections should be held, the Chairman said the Commission would request to hold them after the Presidential Elections because preparations for them need at least 50 days.

“Even if 50 days are counted from now, the PC election date will go beyond October 20. We will need a minimum of a week to finish all the work and move on to the Presidential Election. This is practically difficult. It is too late to hold the PC elections at this stage,” he explained.

However, Deshapriya said that if the Supreme Court issues a verdict, they would have to consider it. He said they would have to request time from the Supreme Court to hold the Provincial Council elections after the Presidential elections.
