New railway line from BIA to Veyangoda planned

A new railway line is being planned from the Bandaranaike International Airport, Katunayake to Veyangoda as a tourism promotion drive. This will enable tourists arriving at the airport to travel to Kandy, Badulla, Jaffna and Trincomalee and other outstations directly without having to come to Colombo to take connecting trains, Transport and Civil Aviation Minister Arjuna Ranatunga said.

“Currently, the Railways Department and the Transport Ministry is conducting a joint feasibility study on the proposed railway line,” the Minister said.

He was addressing the gathering at a ceremony held at the Minuwangoda Divisional Secretary recently.

The ceremony was held to distribute housing assistance under the Gamperaliya accelerated development project. Former Minuwangoda SLFP Organiser Ruwan Ranatunga said that even though most people disliked the National Government concept, he was in favour of its because they were dedicated towards serving the people. They would be able to perform a better service to the people if they could continue for another two years or more without facing an election.

He said there were about 400 families without proper sanitation facilities in the Minuwangoda electorate. A massive development programme was now underway in the electorate under the Gamperaliya programme.
